May 2, 2023 Substitute Levy
Background
On January 7, 2023, The BCS Board of Education introduced a Resolution Declaring Intent to Proceed With Election of the Question of Substitution of an Emergency Tax Levy (See Page 3). The Emergency Levy being replaced will expire in 2023.
The term "Emergency Levy" is a misnomer. It does not mean we had any sort of financial emergency. It refers to a type of levy that provides a fixed dollar amount to the schools rather than a percentage of property values. Critically, this levy type does not grow as new homes increase our school population, nor does it keep pace with inflation. As a result, our schools are constantly being squeezed and must periodically ask for levy increases just to maintain the same level of education.
The May 2023 Substitute Levy
While I would personally prefer a simple permanent levy that adequately funds our growing community's schools, our community has been hesitant to approve permanent tax levies in the past, which is why we need you to show up and vote for levies every few years.
Getting Involved
Unfortunately, Ohio state legislators have recently decided that our superintendent and treasurer, the two people most familiar with budget details and school needs, are prohibited from advocating for school levies -- even on their own time! This means that now more than ever, we need the community to get engaged and raise awareness about the importance of the May 2, 2023 election.
Here is what we need you to do:
Request a yard sign to support our schools using this form.
Stay involved by following Creek Pride on Facebook.
Talk to friends about how important it is to vote in the primary. Levies can fail by one vote.
And of course, VOTE!
